| The three main rules of wheel handling that should be followed are “do not roll ”, “do not drop” and “do not bump.” Wheels should be stored in dry locations and on shelves or similar safe locations. Before installing in a machine, a visual inspection and ring test should be performed to ensure it has no cracked, split or chipped areas. Ensure that the maximum speed and size indicated on the wheel correspond to the machine. Flanges should be placed with the outer diameter and contact width equal on either side, and correct ones should be used. Use the blotters attached to the wheels. Use equipment with flange diameters larger than the blotters, and without dirt or cracks. Balance using a balance weight. Ensure a gap of 3 mm or less between the wheel and workpiece rest and a gap of 3 to 10 mm between the wheel and the adjustable tangue. Mounted wheels (points) should be used with wheel axle lengths of 13 mm after mounting as standard. A proper wheel cover that covers at least half the wheel should always be used. Wheels should be test-operated for at least one minute before aplying work on the day of operation, and at least three minutes after replacing a wheel. Portable grinders should be test-operated in a safe location. Safety equipment including protective goggles and dust-proof masks should be worn during operation. In order to prevent the wheel from becoming imbalanced, wheel rotation should be stopped after the coolant has been stopped and completely shaken off. Flying sparks should be blocked with a screen or similar equipment. Steps to prevent particulates should be taken and sufficient ventilation should be provided in order to prevent respiratory illness. |
Do not drop or bump wheels and do not use wheels shown to have flaws upon inspection. If the wheel’s hole diameter does not conform to the machine, do not force it on or modify the hole. Use the wheel at a speed that exceeds the maximum speed indicated on the wheel. Do not use a flange with deformations, scratches, dirt or rust on the wheel contact surface. Do not use a flange without under cut. Do not use a flange (steel disk wheel) with run-off with a nut-mounted wheel. When mounting a wheel on a flange, do not tighten the nut too tightly. Do not use the side surface of wheels unless they are designed to have their side surfaces used. Do not rotate the wheel before attaching the wheel cover. Do not forcibly push workpieces onto wheels. Do not forcibly push wheels onto workpieces. Do not touch the wheel directly while it is rotating. When test-operating a wheel, do not stand in front of the wheel in the direction of rotation. When operating a portable grinder, do not place the grinder on a table, the floor or a workpiece until the wheel has completely stopped rotating. Do not operate wheels in locations that are susceptible to fire or explosions. Do not come within range of flying sparks. Operators who have not been trained for safety should not replace wheels or operate grinding machines. |
